Scope and content

Letters received by the Resident Magistrate of Albany from both official sources and settlers. For some years, a draft of the reply is included.

The letters document the range of activities overseen by the Resident Magistrate (ie shipping, customs, policing, etc) as well as documenting the growth and development of Albany and the surrounding district.

nb: the letters run essentially in chronological order, but from the mid-1860's, a subject numbering system was used. Letters pertaining to a given subject were grouped together but subject numbers would start afresh each year. Although most of the correspondence is complete, some gaps do exist.
