Administrative history
The function of the Department was to manage:
- forest areas that contribute to water supply areas;
- timber production;
- other forest produce;
- recreation and tourism;
- flora and fauna;
- research;
- forest areas where mining operations have occurred.
The Department was abolished in 1985 and the Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM) was formed to take over this organisation's functions.

Forest Department plans showing land settlement areas, timber classification, soil classification and survey areas, sample plots, buildings and works plans (e.g. worker's cottages), etc.
Copies of Department of Lands and Surveys' plans are often used as base plans, which the Forest Department then overlayed with forestry information.
The plans are arranged in two separate sequences at Consignment 6927 and 6928.
