History

A Meteorological Branch was established in Western Australia as part of the Crown Land and Survey's Department in 1876. This branch was responsible for meteorology in WA.

Official rainfall records for Perth commenced in 1876. By the end of 1877, there were 11 stations recording rainfall. By 1888, the number of rainfall gauges had increased to 103 and by 1925 the number had risen to 1000 rainfall gauges covering two-thirds of the State.

In 1896, responsibility for meteorology was transferred to the newly established Government Astronomer. In 1908, all State meteorological functions were transferred to Commonwealth control under the Australian Bureau of Meteorology.
