Administrative history

The State Planning Commission was created to provide policy input on planning matters to the Minister, namely:


  • to administer and carry out the Metropolitan Region Scheme;


  • to prepare a planning strategy for the State and to provide advice on land use planning and development.

With the creation of the Department of Planning and Urban Development in September 1989, all staff of the Commission were transferred to the new department. The State Planning Commission was to act primarily as an advisory body and report direct to the Minister for Planning. The Commission remained as a separate entity consisting of the Chairman and Commissioners only.

Administrative history

The Department of Planning and Urban Development was created on the 11 September 1989 and all staff of the State Planning Commission were transferred to the new Department from that date.

The Commission remained a separate entity, to act primarily as an advisory and policy-making body and to report direct to the Minister.

The Department of Planning and Urban Development was abolished in 1995 and the functions of this department were taken over by the Ministry of Planning.

Minutes of the Committee for Statutory Procedures, a committee which came into existence following the merging of the Land Subdivision Committee and the Town Planning Schemes Committee. On 1 March 1995 the Committee for Statutory Procedures changed its name to the Statutory Planning Committee. See minutes for this Committee at WAS 2458.
